I thought it would be fun to dig into the mystery of the St Louis ghost light tonight. A few of our guest’s have talked about this particular mystery as one of their favorites in Saskatchewan, one that helped them get more interested in the paranormal as they grew up, so I figured it was time to actually tell you, my listeners, about what this mystery is – just in case you’ve never heard the stories before.

First, let’s talk a little bit about the history in this area of Saskatchewan, as you’ll find it is not a boring area of the prairies. A lot has happened just within the last 200 years which could explain why so many people think they see ghosts and phantom lights, or hear strange things, while out exploring the back roads of Saskatchewan. And they don’t all have to do with the ghost trains.

History of St Louis, Saskatchewan

St. Louis, Saskatchewan, is a small village south of Prince Albert that is said to still have a population around 400 people, at least that is what the consensus was saying back in 2016. Although it wasn’t incorporated as a village until May 19, 1959, the claims say that a settlement had been there long before that date.

According to the Village of St Louis website, the original settlers arrived to the area back in the early 1880’s, around the same time frame that the Canadian Pacific Railway was being constructed along southern Saskatchewan to cross from Ontario into British Columbia. This isn’t a surprising statistic, as many settlers were moving into Saskatchewan at that time, as the Canadian government, or at least Ontario government, was pushing settlers and those immigrating from other countries to move out West for land and opportunity for their families. Beyond the St. Louis Light, or ghost train as some would claim, there are also many other historical sites that are full of interesting insight into Saskatchewan history close the this particular village.
