Overall, I would give this book a rating of 4/5. Read my overall opinion about the book below.
The Book Summary
In this book, we follow Carolyn along on her interesting life. At first, she was a typical American child – she had a crush on a boy, she attended community events, and she had a family.
That is, until adoption day.
On adoption day, a day she can’t remember, the person she now knows as Father adopted her and all her siblings. After adoption day, he began to raise them according to his own ancient customs – studying books in his Library and learning new powers. These powers make them unlike any American and take them far away from being “normal”.
Carolyn must prepare for a large battle against fierce competitors, in the form of both her friends and enemies. She must fulfill her plan if she is going to succeed, but she has forgotten that she was once human along the way, and that could make it all fall apart.
Why did I choose this book?
This book was a book club choice for the BiblioGhoul Horror Book Club. Although this book isn’t exactly a horror novel, it’s dark twists and turns in this fantasy novel made it an interesting book to talk about.
My Honest Opinion
This book was surprising! I had never heard of it before picking it up from the book club. It had a lot of interesting twists and turns that I enjoyed.
There were some times, however, that it was difficult to follow the story. I wasn’t a big fan of one of the human characters. I believe he was purposely written the way he was, but it made it difficult to find the character believable. I also felt that some of the drops into the past were drawn out and long, making me disconnect from the storyline completely.
Although, even with these downfalls, I still enjoyed the book overall. I feel like it was a huge undertaking to take on the building of the Library and its characters and their individual backstories. For the most part, it was pulled off quite well. It was mostly an easy read and enjoyable. Once you get past the halfway point, it becomes harder to put down, as you just have to know what crazy thing is going to happen next.
