Video: 3 Reasons I Write Horror

I have written a bit about this before on my site, but I wanted to include a video about the same topic on my YouTube channel. Check it out! Would love to know your thoughts about the YouTube channel in the comments. 🙂 Thank you my ghouls!

Hello everyone. Welcome to my channel. My name is K.D. Kulpa. I’m a horror writer and I’m currently going down the path of trying to become published while also writing my second horror book and hope to start my third book soon.

Today I thought I’d kind of go through the reasons why I became a horror writer. I think there are three main reasons to why I chose horror and writing as my passion during the COVID pandemic while being locked in the house.

And the first one is because my childhood home was actually haunted. Of course, I didn’t find this out until after we moved out and I became an adult, but both my brother and my mother had experiences similar to mine in the house. We never talked about them while we lived there, but interesting how it comes out later. When I was a child I would see a man standing at the end of my bed, making faces, smiling, laughing, and dancing around. He wore a white shirt with buttons, brown slack pants, and suspenders. He used to tap on mirrors, I’d hear footsteps coming up the stairs, and voices sometimes. It was terrifying for me at the time, but now of course I realize that he was probably just excited that someone could see him. My mom saw him as a shadow figure. She never saw it clearly who it was. Which is too bad because in the end when I explained what I saw, she actually knew who it was. It was the previous owners of the house. There was two brothers that lived in the house before we did, and one of them actually passed away in the house. So now we are fairly sure that that’s who was haunting the house. And I’m hoping that one day I’ll actually go and be able to visit his grave. I’ve since moved away from that town, so it would have to be a drive to go visit him, but I think it would be nice to go say hi, so that he can recognize that I now know who he was and I am okay with the fact that he was excited to see me.

Reason number two would have to be because I love all things horror and supernatural. I grew up reading Stephen King. I grew up reading Anne Rice, the Vampire Chronicles. I also watched things like Dr. Giggles, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween. When I was a kid, sometimes we would also go look for abandoned houses to see if there was ghosts in it. We would look up about ghost stories in the town because we knew there was some potential ghost sightings in the area, so we would go and try to see them for ourselves. So I’ve always loved everything supernatural, paranormal, those types of things. And even to this day, I still read a lot of Stephen King, but I’m trying to broaden my horizon a little bit by reading indie horror authors and new horror authors that I’ve never read before. Which I talk a little bit about in my website, but mostly I talk about it on my Instagram in case you are interested. You should be able to see a link on that as well.

Okay and the third big reason why I became a horror writer, more a writer in general, would have to do with my grandfather. When I was young, I would spend a lot of time with him. He owned a realtor agency and he set up a desk outside of his main office and it had an old typewriter on it. Which I’m very grateful that I actually have that typewriter now. It’s in my office and I love having it around. But I actually learned to type on it. I also would pretend I was a famous reporter and sometimes a famous author and I’d write stories and I’d write things about people. I just loved it. And I still have very fond memories of doing that while I was growing up. So I think that had a really big influence on me while I was trying to find, I felt like something was missing in my life during COVID while we were locked down. So picking up a pen and a laptop and starting to write again has been a really enjoyable experience. And I hope that I can do more of it as time moves on. So, I hope you like the video and subscribe. I will be posting weekly videos on my channel. Ones from my writing journey, like this one right here. As well as ones about the haunted locations that I’ve been visiting and people that I’ve been interviewing about potential hauntings, unexplained experiences, and those types of things. Currently this is just in Southern Saskatchewan, but I’m hoping as COVID restrictions life, I will be able to slowly move away from Saskatchewan and do Western Canada, maybe even parts of Eastern Canada, and who knows where it will go from there.

Thanks everyone. Until next time my ghouls.

  1. I too have some memories of typewriters and I really think that being exposed to that equipment does have a hand in shaping our interest in writing, lol. I hope to get a typewriter myself, but we’ll see. Anyway, thanks for this post!
